With the Brent Field to about to start the decommissioning stage of it's lifecycle the North Sea is going to once again see some great advances in engineering solutions.
To mitigate the potential for environmental harm very detailed studies have been carried out, not only for the phased removal of the structures, but also the long term legacy from the production phase.
From discovery in 1971 and first oil production in 1976 the way we view the whole lifecycle of the industrial process has change dramatically, now we take into account not just the development and production phases but the decommissioning case also.
Some of the big advances in engineering, materials, metallurgy, robotics, computing have come from either a defence or an offshore requirement, holding offshore BOSIET HUET MIST certs as a photographer I'm looking forward to seeing some really cool engineering in action.
Brent is just the start, we have already seen the NW Hutton platform landed for decommissioning and the industry will grow.
