The day before the UK decided upon its relationship with the EU I was shooting offshore equipment at an engineering company, the product typically represents the many SME's producing products and services that are not 'high profile' manufacturers..such as car producers or big money financial trading and services..it's a company that is investing, innovating and developing.
What they produce is going to export, much to other EU countries and new product streams are firmly targeted towards a wide geographical clientele, the 'IN' vote meant a continuing relationship with their primary market and no worries or uncertainty about trading with the EU.
The nation choose 'OUT' it seems because of the concerns about mass migration into the country from other EU and soon to be EU Countries and some rather distorted figures about 'savings' being directed towards the Education and the NHS, now we have uncertainty..currency has fallen, hesitation to invest and financial/banking trading business reevaluating their need to be in ''The City''
Just as I was wrapping the shoot Lord Peter Mandelson walks in the door to do a bit of last minute canvassing for the 'IN' vote, it was good to hear oratory from a former high profile government minister but whatever your politics are this vote was going to be the most important for a generation.
I think the 'OUT' vote was a protest vote about everything without anyone being disloyal to their own political views, it was two fingers to 'the establishment' both UK and Europe.
Maybe it was about fear of losing our sense of 'Britishness', you have to ask why there are EU nationals filling positions when there is unemployment and people want jobs. My friend is working in Columbia as I write this, I wonder if the Columbians are complaining about 'foreigners' taking their jobs.
In my heart I feel that we have just become those 'slightly annoying but likable neighbors' and now we are moving away..the chain saw we used to lend out will be missed but there are other easy alternatives so it's no problem..I just think that we might have started a rush for everyone to have their own chainsaw-unless you cannot afford to buy one.
Building bridges is better than building walls. (addendum- Mr.D.Trump of New York and US Presidential Candidate seems to think different-USA-Mexico)
